Hungarian honey to become more expensive due to low production-rate
This year, the amount of produced honey in Hungary will be less than in the average years, but it has been stated that the country will have enough, and the supplies cover the nearly 10,000 tonnes of honey Hungarians eat and use per year.
SokszÃnű Vidék reported that in the previous years approximately 20,000–32,000 tonnes of honey was produced in Hungary. Because of the poor weather conditions, this year around 14,000 tonnes is expected. Bees and bee families are healthy and vivid in the country, but because of the dry summer weather blooming was not as intense as in the previous years, making the lives of bees more difficult. In other areas of Hungary with the plants used by bees were frozen because of the cold and rainy weather.
The decreased amount of distributed honey will be more expensive, but the rapid increase will not affect the market.
In 2010, one Hungarian consumed 30 dkg of honey while this number in 2019 nearly reached 1 kg. In the last five years, approximately 1200 to 1800 tonnes of honey was imported. Hungary plays an important part in importing honey to other European countries. Because of its excellent quality and wide range, Hungarian honey is well-known around the continent.
Out of all the honey manufacturing, 10% is provided by Hungarian imports in the EU.
There are currently 1.2 million bee families, providing honey to 20,000 Hungarian families. The government gave around 300 million EUR to support the production of Hungarian honey during the coronavirus-epidemic.
